Encouraging students to speak can be quite challenging in the languages classroom, and I’ve found that even my more advanced learners can be quite reluctant, especially if the group is fairly large. I use a range of strategies to promote speaking, and idioms, proverbs and fun expressions which sound quite strange when translated literally are really popular - for example, we have regular competitions to see who can get the most idioms or expressions into dialogues and conversations. This works really well for students of all stages and ages. The posters show the literal translation, which generally sounds very odd, such as this particular idiom Das ist mir Wurst - That is sausage to me! and the correct corresponding translation. We also discuss other possible translations into English, which helps them understand the concept of translation, and that there are potentially many correct ways of expressing meaning accurately. The posters also lend the learning environment a real German ambiance, promoting the everyday use of German.
There are two backgrounds - the German flag looks great, but definitely uses a lot of ink, so you may prefer the poster without a background - this looks just as good! Keep checking back for more posters if you like them, as I have a huge collection!
Have a browse in my store for more German classroom display resources, and a wide range of other German teaching and learning materials, with German dollar deals, special offer bundles, and lots of freebies .

SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCH FREEBIE
SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCH FREEBIE Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie Spanish Christmas word search features fourteen common Spanish Christmas words, which helps to develop students’ awareness of some Spanish Christmas vocabulary and customs, such as la Nochebuena and el turrón. I use this as a prompt to stimulate discussion about Spanish Christmas practices and traditions, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too.
There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are absolutely essential for me, as they provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, help them develop more independence in their learning, and they genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ each others’ work - additionally, they’re a great teacher time-saver, which is always a bonus! The word searches are in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading from left to right for speakers of English as a first or home language, facilitating their engagement with the activity.
Have a browse in my store for more Spanish Christmas activities, and a wide range of other Spanish teaching and learning materials, with special offer bundles, resources boxes, and lots of freebies too!

This is a free set of 15 French speaking prompts, with suggested responses. My students have always found these a really useful learning activity. With the structured speaking prompts, they are able to develop confidence in their speaking, working independently in pairs or small groups. At the same time, they are building their vocabulary and enhancing their understanding and knowledge of***French grammar*** too.
There are 15 questions with 15 suggested responses. As students become more confident and competent, they begin to rely less on the prompt cards, and answer questions in their own way - and even ask them differently too, if their talk partner is using the answer card as the main prompt.
The questions in this freebie are aimed at advanced beginner to intermediate French students, though my more advanced students enjoy ‘going back to the start’ too, particularly near exam time. There’s a reference sheet, with all the questions and answers written out in full - I always provide a reference resource, and my students like to keep them in their learning folders for longer-term reference. When they create their own questions and answers for each other on the question and answer card template, they also find them really useful as a form of writing frame.

FRENCH CONDITIONAL PERFECT TENSE CONJUGATION PRACTICE
ALEVEL FRENCH CONDITIONAL PERFECT TENSE CONJUGATION PRACTICE 25 high-frequency French verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys & verbs lists ideal for***A Level French*** students who are working with more complex language and texts, including a wide range of authentic resources, and developing their knowledge and understanding of tense and mood in French. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom
The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. Language learners do often try to conflate what they know about grammar in their first language, with the grammar of the language they are learning. Students whose first language is English often look for a direct equivalent of would, similar to when they first meet the conditional tense for example, or they may use***avoir*** instead of être for verbs which require être as the auxiliary. Students do need to to have a good grasp of the auxiliary verbs être and avoir in the conditional tense , as well as the patterns for forming the relevant past participles, in order to ensure that they can form the conditional perfect tense accurately.
The resource has the following structure:
Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French-English and English-French.
Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations:
Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in French across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation.
Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in French.
Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding French verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt.
Notes and Next Steps template which students visit regularly - it really does encourage them to think about where they are now, how confident they feel, and what they might need to work on a little more to be absolutely sure of their conjugation skills.

FRENCH PREPOSITIONS LIST FREEBIE
FSL FLE FRENCH PREPOSITIONS PRÉPOSITIONS FRANÇAISES 40 high-frequency French prepositions in the list, alphabetically French-English and English-French. I create a lot of essential high-frequency French vocab lists for my French language students, as they find them really useful, both in the classroom and at home. The lists work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag, which I tend to use for vocab display, or black wave. I use a background for vocab lists quite a lot, because it does make them more visually appealing, which is really important for language learners who do have a lot of vocab to learn.

It’s great to create a new look for the new school year - I use bunting not only to create a real French look and feel in the learning environment, but also to promote everyday language and core vocabulary for learners of all ages. Bunting works well throughout the entire school year, but definitely has a celebratory back to school feel! Each individual banner / bunting has a small tag that you can clip to a line of string across the room (like a washing line!), or to a wall.

Ideal reference resource for students focusing on high-frequency French conjunctions and connectives. I’ve found that the lists are a great learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class.
This list is a collection of 35 high-frequency French conjunctions and connectives that students will meet in the advanced beginner French to intermediate French stages of French learning programs, and useful for students beginning advanced French as a vocabulary audit.
It’s an important step in language learning is to ensure that students quickly develop a useful vocabulary bank, are able to recognize French conjunctions and connectives, and are confident with the meaning of those words in their first / home language, so that they can produce more detailed and descriptive language and more complex sentences and texts as soon as possible.
Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning 35 conjunctions and connectives all at once though - this is more of a longer-term reference resource that students can use to audit their developing French vocabulary, and it is definitely the case that frequent and regular use in real-world practical contexts is far more successful at embedding vocabulary into longer-term memory.
There are two alphabetical lists - one French-English, and one English-French, as I’ve found that most language students prefer to have both as a reference resource. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag (which is good as part of a French vocabulary display), and plain white.
The list is a great time-saver for teachers too - if you’re preparing resources focusing on conjunctions in French for your students, the list is a really good starting point.

FRENCH DATES DAYS MONTHS SEASONS : 36 DIFFERENTIATED TASK CARDS

The questions are entirely in French, with some translation questions both from French into English, and***English into French***. It’s important to help students understand as soon as possible that translation does not mean simply exchanging word for word, and that languages do work in different ways to express the same things.
This free set comprises the following non-editable files:
12 differentiated question cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper - this size allows for longer and more complex sentences or calculations in a font that is sufficiently large for students at this stage of their introduction to Italian to access the language easily and successfully, which is a really important motivator for learning. Laminating is definitely worth the prep time and extra expense, as the cards will last in great condition for absolutely years. Learning is very successful when students can engage frequently with the activity over a longer period of time - even my more advanced students enjoy revisiting and refreshing prior learning.
answer key & recording sheet - I usually have my students use their class workbooks to note answers, and use recording sheets for more formal assessment purposes

A great French Christmas picture & vocabulary reference resource for younger learners of French. It works well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class.
There are 20 common French Christmas words with pictures that I’ve found ideal for children learning French. I’ve used a blend of masculine and feminine nouns, definite article and indefinite article and there are some plurals too. I use this to stimulate discussion about articles, the concept of gender in French (which is often quite contrary to some learners’ first language, such as English), and forming the plural in French. It’s also great for promoting discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in France and French regions, as well as other French-speaking countries, comparing them to other Christmas customs with which students are familiar. Over time, I encourage students to add to the list - by the end of their French learning program, they’ll have a comprehensive French Christmas vocabulary bank.
There are two backgrounds to choose from - Christmas colors (which I tend to use as part of a French Christmas display), and blackline snow.

Sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 21 countries where Spanish is an official language, with an additional 3 where a significant number of the population speak Spanish as their first or second language. The word searches help students develop their knowledge and awareness of the Spanish-speaking world, and just how widely Spanish is spoken around the globe.
In Grids 1-4, students search for a particular country. In Grids 5 & 6, they search for a range of capital cities. Grid 7 gives 16 capital cities as prompts, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid. Similarly, in Grid 8, there are 16 countries given, and students search for the corresponding capital cities in the grid. Grids 9 & 10 show a selection of national flags, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid, and also write the country name in the prompt box next to the individual flag.
There is a single grid per page, A4 (8.5 x 11) portrait format. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. Each grid has a corresponding answer key, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it.
There’s a complete reference sheet of all 24 countries, capital cities and flags - you can either laminate this to share around small groups of students, or give one to each student to stick into their learning workbooks as a general longer-term reference resource.

FRENCH VERBS BOOK #1
FRENCH VERBS 500 high-frequency French verbs, listed alphabetically both French-English and English-French - a great learning support resource for French intermediate moving into advanced French learners, and can also be given to beginner French students, providing a language road map with learning goals, outlining the verbs they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning.
There are 42 pages in the book, and all 500 verbs are listed alphabetically French-English and English-French. Verbs that are conjugated with the auxiliary être verb are indicated by (être) following the particular verb. I use the reference book for quick vocabulary quizzes too - either I or a nominated student shouts out a French or English verb, with teams giving the corresponding French or English verb - I’ve found this is a really successful way of avoiding more formal vocabulary tests, while still providing students with frequent opportunity to refresh and embed essential French vocabulary.
The books are ideal for***KS4 French*** students, and as a refresher and verb audit for those moving into advanced level A Level French. For UK teachers, these are roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA).
We use the Notes and Next Steps template to think about progress and vocabulary knowledge. Students find this really useful, and do like to map and track their own progress. It can be helpful in guiding and informing whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really useful learning activity too - students also note down any new French verbs they learn, enabling them to build a really comprehensive verb vocabulary reference resource.
The verbs are useful for engaging with the following topics and themes:
youth, identity & lifestyle
fashion
culture, customs and traditions
relationships and family
technology and social media
sport, health and fitness
France and French-speaking countries
free time, hobbies and interests
entertainment and leisure
food and drink
local, national & international global areas of interest
transport
holidays, tourism and travel
environment, pollution, recycling and climate
social issues
school, college, current and future study
work experience, skills and personal qualities

Three differentiated conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations:
Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Spanish across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation.

Perfect for developing German language skills in general, as well as for practicing and revising numbers 0-31 in German - there are 12 differentiated questions, answer key and recording sheet. I’ve found that Christmas is a great time to revisit language we started with a couple of months before, and these are ideal for that. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities.
Challenge cards are really versatile too - we use them not only when we’re focusing on the target vocab, but throughout the year as starters and refreshers. The goal is not simply to learn and practice how to count in German, but also to enjoy working with language, and to feel confident about doing so. The questions range in complexity and challenge, and are great for honing numeracy skills too - especially if calculators are not allowed. There is a range of Christmas-theme images as visual clues for learners, Knecht Ruprecht and Weihnachtsmann - most of the questions are in German, so it’s really important to give learners appropriate support, and they’re great for stimulating discussion about German Christmas traditions and vocabulary. There’s a color set, and also a blackline set.
Files are non-editable in a zipped format:
Set of 12 differentiated question cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate, cut out. Color & BW
A5 (5.8 x 8.3) page answer key & recording sheet

I’ve labelled the freebie set with letters A-L, so that you can mix them together with the set of 36 challenge cards - students can identify which questions belong to which answer key in this way, and together there are 48 question cards, which will keep your students really busy.

This is a whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, perfect for regular use in the run-up to Christmas. It’s great to learn some French Christmas vocabulary, though I don’t expect my learners to learn all the words necessarily - it’s equally important to introduce learners to different traditions and practices through the images, and develop their general French language skills confidently and happily.
The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. Learners walk around, talking to each other and working together to create the chain. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too.
The aim of the game is to create an alphabetical word chain - this can either be a ‘human’ chain, though I prefer to have learners work together to create an alphabetical line on a table, or even on the floor. There are 32 French Christmas words, arranged alphabetically. The first and last cards have J’ai la première carte and J’ai la dernière carte written on them. If you have fewer than thirty-two learners in your group, randomly select several to have more than one card. Learners love it when you play too!
The words are all definite article, masculine and feminine, with singular and plural - this also offers a useful opportunity to talk about grammatical concepts if your learners are at that particular stage. Try to laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and they do last for absolutely years! Learners can also apply their language skills very practically (and artistically!) by creating their own cards on the template. We tend to play against a timer, often in teams (you’ll need a couple of sets for this) - learners really enjoy trying to beat their own record!
